One has to wonder though: can 3 bytes actually be heard in a wav file that produces 180.000 bytes per second?

Yes, they can be heard. Take a file without lots of high-frequency harmonics and put a 0x7FFF or 0x8000 sample in and it will be a very audible pop. 70.124.88.175 02:53, 18 October 2013 (CEST)
