AVI (Audio/Video interleave) is the most popular audio+video container format. Nearly all software video players and editors support it.

It was developed by Microsoft to become the standard video storage medium in Windows systems.

It supports countless types of codecs, both audio and video ones.

Being a very old format, it has several limitations that are addressed on more modern container formats, like MP4, OGM, MOV and Matroska.
