Band-pass filter "passes" (preserves) a certain range of frequencies (that is, a band), while removing everything else.
Band-pass filters are used e.g in MP3 encoder filterbank, which used band-pass filters to divide the whole frequency range (full bandwidth) into 32 subbands which can be then processed separately.
