Foobar2000 One Way Sync—or OWS—is a Foobar2000 component that allows you to transfer files directly into a folder—PC or MTP device—in a couple of clicks. The main difference with the default option on Foobar2000 is that, as said, can copy to MTP devices. In order to do so, you need to install and configure One Way Sync. The first part of this article will help you to get familiar with the options and sections of the component while the second part will show you how the different sections interact with each other, and how to make use of it with examples.

==Installing==

To install One Way Sync just download the official component from the Foobar2000 repository—or external links at the bottom of this page—and proceed with a regular install on your F2000; drag and drop or install and choose the component, and restart if it is not asked. Once installed you will have the component in your ''Preferences>Tools'' section.

==Configuring your One Way Sync component==

This component has three sections and basically, you have to set a ''device'' and a ''task'' to be performed on that device. On the ''device'' section you can set the destination itself and if the files must be encoded among other options. On the other hand, a ''task'' is saying to the component how you want the files to be transferred, for instance, you want a folder full of music files or a folder containing all the files in folders ordered by artist and album.

===First section===
You can set here the encoder settings among other options a for example what files are treated as cover art.
[[File:1 section one way sync.png|center]]

*'''Encoder Settings''': shows the encoder configuration when done on the fly. You can create or add a new one as well as remove the already present one;
*'''Save lossy files at lossless source path''': once you have converted the .flac files, for instance, the converted files get stored in the source path of the .flac files so you do not have to repeat the conversion. This is useful for weak PC with a lot of storage capacity;
*'''Store path to lossy files in tags''': when the previous option is ticked then the path where the lossy files are stored is embed in the files' tags;
*'''Show summary at end of sync''': when the copy of the files is done a popup with information is shown—files converted or playlists created, for instance;
*'''Create subfolder for each task''': you can choose whether you want to create a folder for every single ''task''—playlists—associated to a ''command'' or if you want a single folder for all the songs transfered—in case you want a single folder with all the songs on it just untick it, for instance. So for example if you are transferring two ''tasks'' with a playlist each one, each one of those ''tasks'' is transferred to separate folders or not, depending on the option you choose here;
*'''Print additional info to console''': additional info is written in the console, you can access that through the ''View'' menu;
*'''Convertion threads''': when transferring songs, some, can be converted and this option lets you decide how many files you would like to convert at the same time;
*'''Cover filename''': when transferring files the album covers can be transferred as well and you can choose here what filenames will be treated as album covers, by default folder.jpg or cover.jpg—you can add a custom one in case you use one as, for example, albumcovers.png.

===Second section: devices and ''commands''===
Think of a ''command'' as a way to tell the component, on one hand, the destination—PC, USB...—and folder you want the music files transferred, and on the other hand, the ''tasks''—tittle format and playlists—you want to apply to a one single ''command''. Other options are available as copy lyrics or cover art.
[[File:2 one way sync devices.png|center]]

====Destination devices and folders====
As you can see here are included the folders where the music files are going to be stored. You can double-click one path to modify it or create a new one as well as remove the already existing ones. The WPD paths show the MTP devices, those are automatically added once the component detects that is been connected to the PC, they stay there unless you remove them manually even if the device is unplugged.

====Device commands and options====
*'''First row''': the first row lets you chose a name for the ''command'';
*'''The second row''': lets you choose between the destination devices and folders, meaning, you can choose here where you want to transfer the files—PC to a folder name ''music'' or USB root folder. So basically you can choose a given destination you created on ''Destination devices and folders'';
*'''The third row''': here you can choose the coder you want to use in case you want to use on the fly conversion—in summary, here it will be shown the coders you introduced in the section ''Encoder Settings'' in the first section;
*'''Sync tasks''': each ''command'' is associated to a ''task'' and a ''task'' is simply saying to One Way Sync the way the files are written before trasnfering—01. Artist - Title track, for instance—and which playlist, if any, you choose to transfer—see ''[[One Way Sync#Third section: tasks|Third section: tasks]]'' for more explanations about that feature;
*'''Convert lossless files''': this is useful if you want to automatize the conversion of for instance .flac files. Once you check this those files will be always converted with the encoder you set on ''Encoder settings'', so on the PC you will have the .flac files while on the mobile you will have the converted version of those files;
*'''Convert these lossy files''': choose what extensions of lossy files you want to always convert;
*'''Copy covert art''': choose if you want to copy the cover arts of all files to the folder destination in one single folder;
*'''Always embed cover art''': if you want the cover art to embed on the files, tick that one;
*'''Copy lyrics''': choose if you want to copy the ''.lrc'' files stored in the same source folder as the file itself;
*'''Linux compatible playlist''': create playlist compatible with Linux style path, for example, for Android devices;
*'''Process destination files with''': lets you choose what to do with the files once they are transferred to the destination folder—for instance, erase all the cover arts or rate them with a four;
*'''Show files removed since last sync''': the files that were removed after the previous sync will be added to a special playlist on Foobar2000;
*'''Delete unreferenced files''': files not checked to copy on the next sync—but already present on the destination device—will be erased from the destination device;
*'''Import files from device''': you can set a folder from the device to import any kind of files—pictures, for instance—, just introduce the source path and the destination path;
*'''Delete files after successful import''': after doing the previous operation you can check this option if you want to delete the files from the source path.

===Third section: tasks===
Think of a ''task'' as a way to tell the component the way you want title format your music files on the destination device and which playlist will be transferred in case you choose any of them. So, you can transfer various playlists in batch with one title format or you could assign various title formats to various playlists setting a new ''task'' for each title format and associate all the ''tasks''—since they all will appear on ''[[Second section: Devices|sync tasks]]''—to one single ''command''—destination—.
[[File:3 tasks one way sync.png|center]]

====Titlteformatting scripts====
[[File:One way sync folders vs all files no folders.png|right|400px|Folders of artist and albums vs. all songs in one single folder.]]
Here you can add, modify or remove a title format to set the way the music files are organized on the destination folder; for instance, if you want separate files by artists and albums you can set the title format to ''files\%artist%\%album%\%title%.$ext(%_path%)'', it will create separate folders for artists and then, inside those ones, folders separated by albums—first picture. If you want all the files on the same folder set a tittle format ''%artist% - %album%'' or whichever title format you want—second picture.

====Sync tasks and options====
In this section you can set ''sync tasks'', meaning, you can define ''sync tasks'' and decide how those title format your music files in the destination folder, and choose which playlists, in case you just use a fixed couple, will be affected by this given ''task''. For instance, you can create two different playlists; one to synchronize with an MTP device, and another one if you want to transfer the music files to a USB. Now you create a ''task'' for each playlist with different, not necessarily, title formats. If you do not select any playlist there is no problem because you can always perform the ''task'' from the ''file operations'' menu on Foobar2000 context menu.

==Transferring the files==
[[File:Popup when selecting no playlist tasks.png|center|300px|Popup showing when you select a playlist or all the files and ''Right click''.]]
Depending on how you have configured the component's options you have various ways of transferring the files.
*If you have selected playlists on ''Tasks'' you can simply go to ''File>One Way Sync'' and select the name of the ''command'' you have there;
*if you have not selected a playlist on ''Tasks'' then you can select a playlist on the ''playlist manager'' or select all the tracks from the playlist and then ''Right click>File Operations>One Way Sync>Select'' and a popup will appear where you can choose the destination and the title formatting and even if you want to copy the playlist too—this last option will open a dialogue where you can choose where to save it;
**optionally you can choose to use the last ''command'';
**in order to save playlists you must do it on the PC, so if you transfer the files to an MTP device this option is not possible—just transfer the files to the Desktop, for instance, copy the playlist and then copy/paste the folder on the MTP device if you want the playlist.

==How to make the component interact between the different sections==
Let us say that you want to copy in the desktop on one single folder named ''new folder'' all the music files from a given playlist ordered by ''artist - tittle''.

*Go to ''Devices'' and create a path on ''[[#Second section: Devices|Destination devices and folders]]'' that leads to the desired folder, ''new folder'' in this case—you can create the folder and copy/paste the path directly;
*on ''device commands'' create a new ''command'' and name it ''copy to desktop'';
*on the next row select the desired path, ''new folder'' in that case;
*change the encoder if you want to—remember you must add it to the ''[[#First section|Encoder Settings]]'' section in order to appear here;
*go to ''Tasks'' and create a new ''[[#Sync tasks and options|sync task]]'' and name it ''desktop-%artist% - %tittle%'';
*on the next row select a title format you created on [[#Titleformatting scripts|titleformatting scripts]]—, in this case, if you want ''artist - title'' then: ''%artist% - %title%'' which gives ''Mariah Carey - Forever'';
**although you can choose any from [[Foobar2000:Title Formatting Reference#Remapped_metadata_fields|remapped metadata fields]];
***maybe you want ''number of the track - title - date'' then create ''%tracknumber% - %title% - %date%'' which gives ''10 - Forever - 1995'';
**you can even substitute slashes with points or other sings of your preference;
*select the playlist you want to copy, you must create it first on the playlist manager and then choose it here;
*finally close the One Way Sync preferences dialogue and given that you want to copy a playlist you selected on ''Tasks''>''PlaylistNames'', simply go to ''File>One Way Sync>Copy to desktop'' this will transfer—execute the ''command''—all the songs to the ''new folder'' on the desktop with your title formatting option.

But what happens if you want to keep the ''command desktop-%artist% - %tittle%'' because for whatever reason you want to hear the songs on VLC Player when using this ''command'' but at the same time, you want other title format and another playlist when you want to copy the songs to the root of a USB, instead to a folder, when hearing music on your TV.

*Create the previous ''command'', if you did not;
*create another ''command'' but instead of choosing the ''new folder'' on the desktop just copy/paste or write the path to the USB if you want it on the root with no folders;
*name it ''copy to USB'';
*select the path to the USB;
*on ''Tasks'' create a new ''sync task'' and name it ''copy to USB root-[tittleformatyouchoose]'';
*choose the title format you want to use;
*select the playlist you want to copy or any if you do not want to use a specific playlist;
*go to the ''command'' section and choose ''copy to USB root'' and untick ''copy to desktop-%artist% - %tittle%'' leaving ticked ''copy to USB root-[tittleformatyouchoose]''—assuming you have created both;
*close the preferences dialogue and if you choose a playlist then go to ''File>One Way Sync>Copy to USB'', if you did not choose a playlist then go to the playlist manager and right click ''File operations>One Way Sync>Select'' this will pop up the menu ''Selection'' where you can choose a ''command''—destination folder—and a tittle formatting—you can select as well all the tracks in a playlist and right click.

==Installing==

===First section===
You can set here the encoder settings among other options a for example what files are treated as cover art.
[[File:1 section one way sync.png|center]]

*'''Encoder Settings''': shows the encoder configuration when done on the fly. You can create or add a new one as well as remove the already present one;
*'''Save lossy files at lossless source path''': once you have converted the .flac files, for instance, the converted files get stored in the source path of the .flac files so you do not have to repeat the conversion. This is useful for weak PC with a lot of storage capacity;
*'''Store path to lossy files in tags''': when the previous option is ticked then the path where the lossy files are stored is embed in the files' tags;
*'''Show summary at end of sync''': when the copy of the files is done a popup with information is shown—files converted or playlists created, for instance;
*'''Create subfolder for each task''': you can choose whether you want to create a folder for every single ''task''—playlists—associated to a ''command'' or if you want a single folder for all the songs transfered—in case you want a single folder with all the songs on it just untick it, for instance. So for example if you are transferring two ''tasks'' with a playlist each one, each one of those ''tasks'' is transferred to separate folders or not, depending on the option you choose here;
*'''Print additional info to console''': additional info is written in the console, you can access that through the ''View'' menu;
*'''Convertion threads''': when transferring songs, some, can be converted and this option lets you decide how many files you would like to convert at the same time;
*'''Cover filename''': when transferring files the album covers can be transferred as well and you can choose here what filenames will be treated as album covers, by default folder.jpg or cover.jpg—you can add a custom one in case you use one as, for example, albumcovers.png.

===Second section: devices and ''commands''===

====Destination devices and folders====

====Device commands and options====
*'''First row''': the first row lets you chose a name for the ''command'';
*'''The second row''': lets you choose between the destination devices and folders, meaning, you can choose here where you want to transfer the files—PC to a folder name ''music'' or USB root folder. So basically you can choose a given destination you created on ''Destination devices and folders'';
*'''The third row''': here you can choose the coder you want to use in case you want to use on the fly conversion—in summary, here it will be shown the coders you introduced in the section ''Encoder Settings'' in the first section;
*'''Sync tasks''': each ''command'' is associated to a ''task'' and a ''task'' is simply saying to One Way Sync the way the files are written before trasnfering—01. Artist - Title track, for instance—and which playlist, if any, you choose to transfer—see ''[[One Way Sync#Third section: tasks|Third section: tasks]]'' for more explanations about that feature;
*'''Convert lossless files''': this is useful if you want to automatize the conversion of for instance .flac files. Once you check this those files will be always converted with the encoder you set on ''Encoder settings'', so on the PC you will have the .flac files while on the mobile you will have the converted version of those files;
*'''Convert these lossy files''': choose what extensions of lossy files you want to always convert;
*'''Copy covert art''': choose if you want to copy the cover arts of all files to the folder destination in one single folder;
*'''Always embed cover art''': if you want the cover art to embed on the files, tick that one;
*'''Copy lyrics''': choose if you want to copy the ''.lrc'' files stored in the same source folder as the file itself;
*'''Linux compatible playlist''': create playlist compatible with Linux style path, for example, for Android devices;
*'''Process destination files with''': lets you choose what to do with the files once they are transferred to the destination folder—for instance, erase all the cover arts or rate them with a four;
*'''Show files removed since last sync''': the files that were removed after the previous sync will be added to a special playlist on Foobar2000;
*'''Delete unreferenced files''': files not checked to copy on the next sync—but already present on the destination device—will be erased from the destination device;
*'''Import files from device''': you can set a folder from the device to import any kind of files—pictures, for instance—, just introduce the source path and the destination path;
*'''Delete files after successful import''': after doing the previous operation you can check this option if you want to delete the files from the source path.

===Third section: tasks===

====Titlteformatting scripts====

====Sync tasks and options====

==Transferring the files==
[[File:Popup when selecting no playlist tasks.png|center|300px|Popup showing when you select a playlist or all the files and ''Right click''.]]
Depending on how you have configured the component's options you have various ways of transferring the files.
*If you have selected playlists on ''Tasks'' you can simply go to ''File>One Way Sync'' and select the name of the ''command'' you have there;
*if you have not selected a playlist on ''Tasks'' then you can select a playlist on the ''playlist manager'' or select all the tracks from the playlist and then ''Right click>File Operations>One Way Sync>Select'' and a popup will appear where you can choose the destination and the title formatting and even if you want to copy the playlist too—this last option will open a dialogue where you can choose where to save i;
**optionally you can choose to use the last ''command'';

*Go to ''Devices'' and create a path on ''[[#Second section: Devices|Destination devices and folders]]'' that leads to the desired folder, ''new folder'' in this case—you can create the folder and copy/paste the path directly;
*on ''device commands'' create a new ''command'' and name it ''copy to desktop'';
*on the next row select the desired path, ''new folder'' in that case;
*change the encoder if you want to—remember you must add it to the ''[[#First section|Encoder Settings]]'' section in order to appear here;
*go to ''Tasks'' and create a new ''[[#Sync tasks and options|sync task]]'' and name it ''desktop-%artist% - %tittle%'';
*on the next row select a title format you created on [[#Titleformatting scripts|titleformatting scripts]]—, in this case, if you want ''artist - title'' then: ''%artist% - %title%'' which gives ''Mariah Carey - Forever'';
**although you can choose any from [[Foobar2000:Title Formatting Reference#Remapped_metadata_fields|remapped metadata fields]];
***maybe you want ''number of the track - title - date'' then create ''%tracknumber% - %title% - %date%'' which gives ''10 - Forever - 1995'';
**you can even substitute slashes with points or other sings of your preference;
*select the playlist you want to copy, you must create it first on the playlist manager and then choose it here;
*finally close the One Way Sync preferences dialogue and given that you want to copy a playlist you selected on ''Tasks''>''PlaylistNames'', simply go to ''File>One Way Sync>Copy to desktop'' this will transfer—execute the ''command''—all the songs to the ''new folder'' on the desktop with your title formatting option.

*Create the previous ''command'', if you did not;
*create another ''command'' but instead of choosing the ''new folder'' on the desktop just copy/paste or write the path to the USB if you want it on the root with no folders;
*name it ''copy to USB'';
*select the path to the USB;
*on ''Tasks'' create a new ''sync task'' and name it ''copy to USB root-[tittleformatyouchoose]'';
*choose the title format you want to use;
*select the playlist you want to copy or any if you do not want to use a specific playlist;
*go to the ''command'' section and choose ''copy to USB root'' and untick ''copy to desktop-%artist% - %tittle%'' leaving ticked ''copy to USB root-[tittleformatyouchoose]''—assuming you have created both;
*close the preferences dialogue and if you choose a playlist then go to ''File>One Way Sync>Copy to USB'', if you did not choose a playlist then go to the playlist manager and right click ''File operations>One Way Sync>Select'' this will pop up the menu ''Selection'' where you can choose a ''command''—destination folder—and a tittle formatting—you can select as well all the tracks in a playlist and right click.

This page details the syntax that can be used to query for files within the Media Library in [[Foobar2000:Foobar2000|foobar2000]].

For a list of fields and functions that can be used in query syntax, see the [[Foobar2000:Title_Formatting_Reference|title-formatting reference]].

==Conventions in this document==

===Formatting===
Query syntax includes various keywords, also called operators, which invoke specific behaviours. These must be typed in caps, for example DURING.

To aid readability, in the following descriptions and examples, example queries (or fragments thereof) that the user could type into foobar2000 are written in ''italics''. In addition, operators are written in '''bold'''. Such formatting is for readability only and need not/cannot be typed in foobar2000 itself.

===Placeholders===
Query examples may contain placeholders which are enclosed in angle brackets. Their names indicate what they should be replaced with in a real query. If multiple placeholders of the same type occur in the same query example, a number will be appended to the name.
* Example: ''<field> '''GREATER''' <number>''

The following common placeholders are used throughout this document:
* <field> – A reference to a field within the tags of files in the Media Library. This can be either a plain field name (e.g. artist) or a title formatting expression (e.g. "%artist%"). See the [[Foobar2000:Query_syntax#Guidelines|Guidelines]] below for details on these two methods of accessing fields.
* <number> – An integer value (whole number).
* <string> – A text value, which may be enclosed in double quotation marks. See the Guidelines for details.
* <time> – A time value or a title-formatting expression that evaluates to a time value. See [[Foobar2000:Query_syntax#Time Expressions| Time Expressions]] below for details.
* <expression> – A query expression in a composed query. This has to follow the rules described under [[Foobar2000:Query_syntax#Advanced Search|Advanced Search]] below.

==Simple search==
The simple search mode does not use any keywords or functions: it is only used to search for a literal string within the Library.
* ''<any string>'' – Returns only items that have all words from the specified string within their metadata and/or file path.

==Advanced search==
The advanced search allows the construction of more complex queries. It offers several keywords to perform specific types of comparisons and to combine multiple query expressions.

===Text expressions===
* ''<field> '''HAS''' <string>'' – Returns only items that have all words from <string> in metadata field named <field>. Example: ''title '''HAS''' blah''
* ''<field> '''IS''' <string>'' – Returns only items where (at least one) metadata field <field> is equal to <string>. Example: ''artist '''IS''' blah''
* '''''*HAS''' <string> – Same as simple search, but can be combined using logical operators (see below).
* '''''ALL''''' - No operators can be used. This single keyword simply returns all items within the Media Library.

===Numeric expressions===
Performs integral number comparison between the value of a <field> and a <number>. For example: ''rating '''GREATER''' 3''
* ''<field> '''GREATER''' <number>''
* ''<field> '''LESS''' <number>''
* ''<field> '''EQUAL''' <number>''

===Metadata expressions===
* ''<field> '''MISSING''''' – Returns only items that don't have a metadata field named <field>. Example: ''genre '''MISSING'''''
* ''<field> '''PRESENT''''' – Returns only items that have a metadata field named <field>. Example: ''genre '''PRESENT'''''

===Time expressions===
* ''<time1> '''BEFORE''' <time2>'' – Returns only items where <time1> value is before <time2>. Example: ''%last_modified% '''BEFORE''' 2008''
* ''<time1> '''AFTER''' <time2>'' – Returns only items where <time1> value is after <time2>. Example: ''%last_modified% '''AFTER''' 2008''
* ''<time1> '''SINCE''' <time2>'' – Returns only items where <time1> value is not before <time2>. Example: ''%last_modified% '''SINCE''' 2007''
* ''<time1> '''DURING''' <time2>'' – Returns only items where <time1> value is a subset of <time2> period. Example: ''%last_modified% '''DURING''' 2007''
* ''<time> '''DURING''' '''LAST''' [<number>] <time-unit>'' – Returns items where <time> value is contained in the specified period. <time-unit> can be one of '''SECONDS''', '''MINUTES''', '''HOURS''', '''DAYS''', or '''WEEKS'''. Example: ''%last_modified% '''DURING''' '''LAST''' 2 '''WEEKS'''''. If <number> is 1, the expression can be simplified to ''<time> '''DURING''' '''LAST''' '''SECOND'''/'''MINUTE'''/'''HOUR'''/'''DAY'''/'''WEEK''''' (choose one).
Time values used in these expressions must be in one of the following formats: YYYY, YYYY-MM, YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY-MM-DD hh, YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm, YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss.

===Combined queries using logical operators===
Several logical operators are available so that the user can search for items that match (or do not match) various criteria in combination. To create more complex logical queries, parentheses () can be used to enclose parts of the query to ensure that they are evaluated in the correct order (much like parentheses in mathematics).
* ''<expression1> '''AND''' <expression2> – Returns only items where both expressions are true. Example: ''artist '''IS''' blah '''AND''' title '''HAS''' blah''
* ''<expression1> '''OR''' <expression2>'' – Returns only items where at least one expression is true.
* '''''NOT''' <expression>'' – Returns only items where the expression is false. Example: ''NOT last_played '''AFTER''' first_played''
* You can enclose expressions in parentheses to control the order in which logical expressions are evaluated. Example: ''( (artist '''IS''' blah) '''AND''' (title '''HAS''' blah) ) '''OR''' (rating '''GREATER''' 3)''
* To obtain an exclusive-or (XOR/EOR), which is positive if only one expression is true but not both, you can use this: ''(<expression1> '''OR''' <expression2>) '''AND''' '''NOT''' (<expression1> '''AND''' <expression2>)''

==Sorting results==
You can put a '''SORT''' '''BY''' operator at the end of your search expression to have the results from the preceding quiery sorted by the specified title-formatting pattern.
* '''''SORT''' '''BY''' <sort-pattern> / '''''SORT''' '''ASCENDING''' '''BY''' <sort-pattern> – Sort results in ascending order.
* '''''SORT''' '''DESCENDING''' '''BY''' <sort-pattern>'' – Sort results in descending order.

==Guidelines==
===General===
====Case-sensitivity====
*All keywords (for example '''IS''', '''HAS''') must be written in upper-case.
*All search expressions, on the other hand, are non–case-sensitive. For example, ''artist '''HAS''' name'' will find tracks whose ''artist'' field equals "NAME", "name", "Name", and all other combinations of capital and small letters.
*To achieve a case-sensitive comparison between two parameters, use ''"$strcmp(%field%,string)" '''EQUAL''' 1'' and so on. For more information about how to use title-formatting within query syntax, see the relevant section below.

====Double quotation marks====
*<field> and <string> in HAS and IS expressions should be enclosed in double quotation marks (") if they include spaces. Example: ''"my favourite field or string" HAS my''
*In the rare event of complex syntax in which a search expression contains keywords in a way that could introduce ambiguity, enclose the search expression (and hence its embedded 'keywords') within double quotation marks. For example: ''artist '''IS''' "MY BAND IS CALLED AND NOT" '''AND''' '''NOT''' releasetype '''IS''' Demo''
====Simplified access to metadata fields====
Accessing metadata fields can be simplified: If <field> in '''HAS''', '''IS''', '''GREATER''', '''LESS''', '''EQUAL''' does not include any of the characters #, $, or %, it will be treated as a metadata field. Example: ''artist '''IS''' Radiohead''. However, this simplified method of formatting cannot be used to access/query technical information (such as codec specifications) or component-provided information: for that, the user must use title-formatting, as detailed below.
====Comparing two metadata fields====
As noted above, operators such as '''IS''' compare a field (on the left) to a string (on the right). If the user wishes, instead, to compare one field to another field, this can be done using title-formatting. Example: ''"$strcmp(%field1%,%field2%)" '''EQUAL''' 1''

===Title-formatting===
*If <field> in a (sub-)query using '''HAS''', '''IS''', '''GREATER''', '''LESS''', or '''EQUAL''' includes at least one of the characters #, $, or %, it will be treated as a [[Foobar2000:Title Formatting Reference|title formatting]] expression. That is: the title-formatting expression will be parsed, and its end-result will take its place, before the actual query is carried out.
*If spaces are likely to occur in the result, the title-formatting expression should be enclosed within double quotation marks ("), in line with the guidance given above in General.
*Double quotation marks should also be included around title-formatting expressions that use parentheses. This necessarily includes all functions, for example $meta(field) or $info(codec). Doing this removes ambiguity that might result because parenthesis are used natively by query syntax to specify the order of evaluation of logical expressions, as described under the relevant section above.
*Using title formatting expressions to access metadata fields (e.g. "$meta(title)") instead of simple field names (e.g. title) will decrease the speed of queries performed upon large libraries and will break handling of multi-value fields by the operator '''IS'''.

= Masstagger =
[[Image:Foobar2000-Masstagger.png]]

Masstagger is an advanced tool for editing the information of tags in multiple files.
'''Note:''' It's not available as part of foobar2000 0.9.5 or newer installers. It is still however available from the [http://www.foobar2000.org/components/author/Peter official components page].

Masstagger's main limitation is lack of WYSIWYG editing of tags, making it inefficient for typical tag editing scenarios. You should use the [[Foobar2000:Properties|Properties dialog]] instead unless you want to be able to quickly run predefined complex tagging tasks on your files.

== Basic usage ==
[[Image:Foobar2000-Masstagger-howtoactivate.png|thumb|Accessing the main Masstagger dialog]]
To open the main Masstagger dialog, select the tracks you want to work with and choose the "Manage Scripts" command from the context menu, under the "Tagging" submenu.

The left box displays a list of actions that are about to be performed on your tags. The actions are performed in descending order - actions placed lower on the list will operate on tags already altered by actions placed higher on the list.

The "scripts" box contains commands that allow you to save the current chain of actions or restore a chain of actions that was saved earlier.
There are two ways to store Masstagger scripts:
* In foobar2000 configuration - by using the "Save" / "Load" etc buttons - you can quickly load those scripts later, as well as access them directly from the "Tagging" / "Scripts" submenu of the context menu, as well as access them with [[Foobar2000:Preferences:General:Keyboard Shortcuts|keyboard shortcuts]].
* In external files - by using the "Export to file..." and "Import from file..." buttons - such scripts can be easily interchanged between users or between different foobar2000 installations.

== Available actions ==

=== Add value ===
Adds a new value to the specified metadata field. If the field already exists, a new value is added to its values; if it does not, it's created with a single value.

This is particularly useful when working with fields that often have more than one value, such as "ARTIST" or "GENRE".

For an example: an Add "GENRE" = "Rock" action will add "Rock" to the list of genres on affected tracks - if any of these tracks don't have a "GENRE" field yet, such field will be created, with one value equal to "Rock".

=== Auto track number ===
This gives the track number according to the order of the files in the selection.

=== Copy value ===
Copies one tag field to another.

===Embed cuesheet===
This action looks for a cuesheet named %filename%.cue or %filename_ext%.cue in the same folder as the file being processed and embeds it.

=== Format value from other fields ===
This action lets you enter a specific [[Foobar2000:Title Formatting Introduction|title formatting]] pattern for any tag field you wish to edit or create.

In addition to standard title formatting fields, starting with version 1.8.2 you can use %now% to fetch current system time.

=== Guess values from filename ===
Automatically fills metadata values according to file paths, according to a guessing pattern that you specify.

Note that this is similar to the [[Foobar2000:Properties/Automatically Fill Values|Automatically Fill Values dialog]].

The guessing pattern syntax is NOT based on title formatting - functions or field remappings do not apply here.

You can put slash characters in the guessing pattern to also retrieve data from names of folders containing your files.

For an example, if your directory structure is formatted as "Artist\(Date) Album\N. Title.ext" - eg. "Muse\(2006) Black Holes & Revelations\01. Take A Bow.mpc", you can transfer all relevant information from file paths to tags using the following pattern: "%artist%\(%date%) %album%\%tracknumber%. %title%".

=== Guess values from other fields ===
Similar to "Guess values from filename", except it uses other fields - through a [[Foobar2000:Title Formatting Introduction|title formatting string]] - as a source, instead of file names.

=== Input data (one line per track) ===
Enter the data for each song with the pattern indicated, line by line, (one line per song as it is said). Don't worry about the length, the lines could be very long (only adds a vertical scroll bar if it is too long).

=== Remove all fields ===
Removes all tag fields.

=== Remove all except for... ===
Removes all fields except for the ones that you specify. For an example, specify "title;album;artist" to remove all fields other than title, album and artist.

=== Remove field ===
Removes desired tag field.

=== Remove values... ===
Opposite of "Add value". Removes matching values of the specified field. Useful when dealing with multiple genre values for an example.

=== Replace values... ===
Replaces matching values of the specified field with the specified value. Useful for mass-fixing inconsistent tagging, especially when dealing with multi-value fields such as artist or genre, since only the matching value gets altered.

=== Set value... ===
Sets desired tag field (artist,album,etc) to the specified value.

=== Split field by separator... ===
Splits values of the specified field according to the specified separator string. For an example, if your tags have ARTIST fields formatted as "person1 & person2" instead of correct multiple values, you can use this action to split generate multiple values, by specifying "&" as the separator string.

=== Split multiple artist fields ===
If the artist field value contains characters such as "," or "&", the value gets split into multiple values accordingly.

Note: This is equivalent to having two "Split field by separator..." actions, both with field set to "ARTIST", one with separator set to "," and the other with separator set to "&".

== Notes on upgrading from older (pre-1.7) Masstagger versions ==
Various functionality that is now available through other components has been removed.
* File moving functionality - now available through the [[Foobar2000:File_operations|File Operations component]].
* Copying tags between tracks - see: [[Foobar2000:How to transfer tags between two sets of tracks|How to transfer tags between two sets of tracks]].

== Command line interface ==
Masstagger provides extra [[Foobar2000:Commandline_Guide|command line switches]] for tag modifications. Version 1.8.4 of the component shows this information:
Usage:

/tag:help - displays this message

/tag:<command1>[;<command2>;<command3>...] <file1> [<file2> <file3>...]

Commands:

=<VALUE>
Sets
field to <VALUE>, e.g. "/tag:title=test <file>".
You can erase particular field by specifying empty value, e.g. "/tag:comment= <file>".
You can also specify multiple values by separating them with \ character, e.g. "/tag:artist=name1\name2 <file>".
AUTOTRACKNUMBER
Sets TRACKNUMBER field of multiple files according to their order in commandline.
E.g. "/tag:AUTOTRACKNUMBER <file1> <file2> <file3>" will assign TRACKNUMBER=1 to <file1>, 2 to <file2> and 3 to <file3>.
FORMAT:<FIELD>:<SPEC>
Formats <FIELD> using <SPEC>; see title formatting manual for more info how to use it.
E.g. "/tag:FORMAT:COMMENT:"%ARTIST% - %TITLE%" <file>".
GUESS:<PATTERN>:<SPEC>
Guesses field values using <PATTERN>, according to <SPEC>.
To perform "guess values from filename" action, use "/tag:GUESS:<PATTERN>:%_FILENAME% <file>".
E.g. "/tag:GUESS:"%TRACKNUMBER%. %TITLE%":%_FILENAME% <file>".
==section removed from "Playback"(badly needs updating):==

<nowiki>== There are multiple output methods available: DirectSound, waveOut and Kernel Streaming. Which one should I use? ==

The default setting (waveOut) is recommended; it should be safe to use anywhere. Using DirectSound results in better performance (less CPU overhead)—especially under Windows 2000, Windows XP or newer—but there shouldn't be any audible difference between the two. In certain rare cases, Kernel Streaming may produce better results than DirectSound/waveOut (if for some reason you need data sent through digital out to be bit-identical to source stream); however, bit-identical results with DirectSound have been reported on soundcards capable of mixing multiple streams in hardware (with hardware mixing enabled in DirectSound settings).
Please note that Kernel Streaming is an experimental feature with known issues, and using it is ''not'' recommended unless you have a clear need to do so. Most of perceived "sound quality differences" between DirectSound and Kernel Streaming are related to the fact that Kernel Streaming usually bypasses the Windows volume control. In addition, Kernel Streaming only works on Windows 2000, Windows XP or newer.</nowiki>

= General =

== Is this the only FAQ? ==
No. There is [http://www.foobar2000.org/FAQ.html an official one] at the foobar2000.org site. It is maintained independently of this one, and covers different topics.

== Is foobar2000 still under active development? ==
Yes. Please see the forum and the foobar2000 homepage for the latest version and news about upcoming versions.

== I have Windows Vista and my foobar2000 has strange behavior. Do you plan on fixing those bugs soon? ==
Foobar2000 fully supports Windows Vista (other than a limitation in Windows Explorer which causes the "Enqueue" command to not work properly with a large number of files). The problem is most probably due to a component, so updating to the latest version might resolve the problem.

== I'm looking for a specific feature. How should I know if a third-party component suits my needs ? ==
If you are not the Ctrl+F kind of person with your web browser, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get familiar with it. Go to the [[Foobar2000:Components_0.9|components section]], press Ctrl+F and search for keywords related to what you are looking for. [http://pelit.koillismaa.fi/plugins/index.php Foobar2000 official 3rd party components site] is another option, although it does not contain all the components known for 0.9.x at the moment. You will hopefully find something that suits you. Otherwise, maybe you can make a request in the foobar2000 forum or even better, code it yourself then share it with the community!

== How do I upgrade Foobar2000? ==
If it's a minor upgrade (e.g. 0.9.3 -> 0.9.4) then simply install it in the same directory. Remember to select the same "per user" setting while installing; you could lose all your configurations otherwise. If it's a major upgrade (e.g. 0.8 -> 0.9), it's recommended that you uninstall the previous version before installing the newer version, because the components are (almost always) incompatible with the newer version.

== Where can I find old versions of Foobar2000? ==
Old versions can be found [http://www.filehippo.com/download_foobar2000/ at filehippo.com]. Although old versions may be lacking critical bug fixes, they can be useful if you need to use a component or operating system that is no longer supported by the current version. For example, Windows 2000 users can't use foobar2000 versions newer than 0.9.4.5.

= Playback =

== How can I send my files from Windows Explorer into a specific playlist, so as not to erase my active playlist? ==

Preferences → General → Always send to playlist (playlist name)

== Why does dragging and dropping directories / files have erratic results? ==
The culprit is most likely an input component. Removing the input components and adding them back one-by-one can help you pinpoint the location. Note: Haali has coded a stable Matroska component that doesn't cause this problem.

== Why can't I listen to unfinished downloading files? ==
Foobar2000 needs exclusive access to files being played - they can be read by other software while foobar2000 is accessing them but not written to. A good workaround is to copy the unfinished file, then try to play it.

== The 'Previous' button doesn't work. ==
In Random playback mode, the Previous button behaves as a Stop button.

== How can I (automatically) move to the currently playing track in the playlist? ==
By default, double-clicking the status bar will highlight the currently playing track. To make it automatic, select Playback > Cursor follows playback. You can also create a shortcut from the file > preferences > keyboard shortcuts menu so each time you hit, for instance, ALT+X the playlist and the song you are playing right now will show up.

= Look & Feel =

== I just saw a great looking foobar2000 window, but I don't know how to get mine looking the same way! Is there no hope for me? ==
Of course there is! First take a look at those threads and get in touch with what other users achieved:
Yes, through plugins:

== I have seen some people using something which pops up to display the song being listened to. Where can I find it? ==
* It's called [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=33236&hl=foo_pretty+pop-up foo_prettypop]. Note that it requires the .NET Framework to work.
* If you are using Columns UI, it has a popup notification feature too ("Preferences -> Display -> ColumnsUI -> Status Bar/Systray (tab) -> Show popup notification baloon")

== Is there a way to map my multimedia keyboard keys? ==
You can assign actions with keys including multimedia key from the in "Preference -> General -> Keyboard Shortcuts". If it still does not work, take a look at [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=39a242a80d03f35b424165dd8e06be6b&showtopic=50067 this] tutorial.

= Columns UI =

== How do I know which component is meant to be used with Columns UI?==
[[Foobar2000:Components_0.9|Component section]] of the wiki shows which plugin you can use for ColumnsUI's interface.

== How can I get tabbed panels? ==
Use [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=46106&st=0&p=410247&#entry410247 uie tabs]. Also, the latest version of Column UI (0.2.0 Alpha 3) has the feature built-in.

== Where are the options for changing the playback buttons? ==
Right click on buttons area → Customise...

== How can I display the album art and cover above my playlist? ==
To set the panels above your playlist, just use list all toolbars, then add the panels/toolbars/visualizations that you want to use. Organize them as you want them to be displayed. And finally, use the 'minimum height' values of the corresponding panels. As it is not a common way to use the toolbar, you may experience some unexpected behaviour. Keep in mind that it may create some display problems. Musicmusic may fix this into the next version of Columns UI.

== I have more questions. ==
Refer to the [http://yuo.be/wiki/columns_ui:faqs official ColumnsUI FAQ].

= Media Library, Tagging & Album Cover =

== I updated my tags, but foobar still shows the old tags. How can I fix this? ==
This happens almost exclusively when you use a third party program to update tags (updates made by Foobar2000 itself are immediately reflected). Select the file(s), right click on any of them, go to Tagging, then click on "Reload Info from File(s)".

== How can I fill in tags based on file names or directory structure? ==
Right click on the file(s) in the playlist → open the [[Foobar2000:Properties|Properties dialog]] → choose "Automatically Fill Values" from its "Tools" menu. For more details, see the [[Foobar2000:Properties/Automatically Fill Values|Automatically Fill Values]] page.

== How can I automatically assign tracknumbers to a group of files? ==
Select all tracks that need to be filled with tracknumbers → right click → open the [[Foobar2000:Properties|Properties dialog]] → choose "Auto Track Number" from the "Tools" menu.

== Is there a way to have album covers downloaded automatically? ==
Unfortunately, it is not possible. But, there is a way to be 2 clicks away from those cover arts. Take a look at [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=43429&hl=cover+download this thread]for more info.

Or you can check this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mp0bWfWHG1s YouTube] video which uses [https://sourceforge.net/projects/album-art/| Album Art Downloader].

== How can I make a playlist containing duplicate entries? ==
Unfortunately, this is not possible. However, you can use the album list panel component to remove the dead entries from your library, and use a free program like [http://zabkat.com/xplorer2] to find the duplicate files in your computer.

== How can I make a playlist containing files recently added to the media library? ==
One of the information which the [[Foobar2000:Components/Playback Statistics v3.x (foo playcount)|official playback statistics component (foo_playcount)]] collects is the time a file was added to the Media Library. This data is accessible by the %added% field, so you can search by a query such as %added% DURING LAST 2 WEEKS in Facets, Album List, or Media Library Search.

== How do I save tags in a database (as opposed to writing it in the file)? ==
The [[Foobar2000:Components/Playback Statistics v3.x (foo playcount)|official playback statistics component (foo_playcount)]] stores the information it has collected in a database by default. If you need to store some other information in a database, use [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=45994 foo_custominfo]. Note that foo_custominfo is incompatible with foobar2000 since version 0.9.5.3.

== How do I tag various artist albums (compilations)? ==
Enter the information in the Album Artist tag. Most people use "VA", "Various" or "Various Artists", but you can put anything you want.

= Titleformatting =

== How can I display information about the next track in the playlist? ==
This is not possible in foobar2000 since v0.9.5.3.

== How can I calculate and display how long it's been since I last played a track? ==
The [[Foobar2000:Components/Playback Statistics v3.x (foo playcount)|official playback statistics component (foo_playcount)]] stores the information in the %last_played% field. However, the current system time cannot be retrieved via titleformatting in foobar2000 v0.9.5.3 and beyond, so in most cases, you cannot calculate how long it has been (e.g., in days) since a track was last played. (See the [http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=58233&view=findpost&p=564223 relevant discussion] at the Hydrogenaudio forums.)

The one exception is [[Foobar2000:Components 0.9/Columns UI (foo ui columns)|ColumnsUI (foo_ui_columns)]], which makes %_system_year%, %_system_day%, %_system_month%, %_system_day_of_week%, and %_system_hour% available. Hence it is technically possible to calculate and display the difference, but it is only accessible from within the Columns UI playlists.

== How can I apply color changes to my titleformatting results? ==
The $rgb() command is currently unsupported in the Default UI playlist. For complex coloring schemes, you need to use [[Foobar2000:Components 0.9/Columns UI (foo ui columns)|ColumnsUI (foo_ui_columns)]].
== There is always a long delay before changes to the DSPs take effect. Can I reduce this? ==
Try reducing the output buffer length from Preferences → Playback → Output → (your selected output method). However, do not put it at the minimum length. 300ms should be enough (more if you are using several DSPs).

== What are metadb_handle leaks? ==
metadb_handles are resources used in the metadata management in foobar2000. A leak indicates that a component does not release them (in time). The overall effect of such a leak is relatively harmless. Nevertheless, this is a programming error and foobar2000 detects and reports it to the user. Unfortunately, it is not possible for foobar2000 to detect which component caused the leak.

== I hear static when fading in/out - pause/unpause. ==
Be sure you have the latest sound drivers installed and disable your DSPs before reporting it. Some users reported that using [http://foobar2000.org/components/index.html Kernel Streaming] instead of the default output fixed the problem ("Preferences -> Playback -> Output"), but be aware that this plugin is still experimental and it is issue related in some cases.

== Playing certain files over HTTP doesn't seem to work in foobar2000. It works in other players. What's wrong? ==
foobar2000 uses MIME types to determine the file type of a given file. If an invalid MIME type is returned, it will cause foobar2000 to use the wrong decoder. If an unidentified MIME type is returned, foobar2000 will use the extension to determine the file's contents. Using the extension to determine the file's contents is a difficult thing to do in code, and is unlikely to be included in foobar2000. To fix the problem, get the server to return valid MIME types. This is a server-side problem, not a foobar2000 problem.

== Foobar2000 shut down improperly / crashed, and now my recent changes are all gone! How do I prevent this in the future? ==
Foobar2000 automatically saves configuration changes (including edits to the playlists) only when it is closed properly. If foobar2000 crashed, you should first try to find and remove the cause of the crash, e.g., an unstable third-party component. There are, of course, other causes for an improper shutdown, such as Windows crashing or a power outage. To reduce the risk of losing changes, you should manually save the settings by doing one of the following:
* Closing and restarting foobar2000 during/after making major changes
* Using the Save All button in the Preferences window
* Binding the 'Save Configuration' command to a keyboard shortcut/toolbar button.

== How do I upgrade Foobar2000? ==

== The 'Previous' button doesn't work. ==
In Random playback mode, the Previous button behaves as a Stop button.

== How can I (automatically) move to the currently playing track in the playlist? ==
By default, double-clicking the status bar will highlight the currently playing track. To make it automatic, select Playback > Cursor follows playback.

= Look & Feel =

== I just saw a great looking foobar2000 window, but I don't know how to get mine looking the same way! Is there no hope for me? ==
Of course there is! First take a look at those threads and get in touch with what other users achieved:

== I have more questions. ==
